Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), and Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) made their first joint visit to a local Rockford employer today when visiting SupplyCore. The legislators met with the company management team and employees to discuss the potential impact of sequestration cuts on defense and non-defense programs scheduled to begin on March 1, 2013.
SupplyCore is one of the top defense contractors in the Rockford region and is among the top 20 small businesses nationally doing business with the U.S. Department of Defense. A past study by the National Association of Manufacturers indicates that across-the-board budget cuts to the Department of Defense would cost approximately 1 million jobs nationally. “We greatly appreciate our U.S. Representatives taking the time to visit our facility, meet with our workforce, learn more about our business and concerns, and help us better understand what Congress is doing to achieve deficit reduction while addressing devastating cuts to the Department of Defense and other domestic programs. The fact that they came here together really demonstrates their strong commitment to helping our company and the Rockford area in a bipartisan manner.” – Bryan Davis, Director of Government Affairs and Contracts
“As a military pilot, I’ve seen firsthand that the aerospace and defense industry is a strong economic driver. However, its outlook is uncertain as the national debt threatens federal aerospace and defense-related industry programs. The Greater Rockford Area will be especially hit hard as it ranks first in aerospace manufacturing, making up 80 percent of the Illinois industry workforce and second in overall manufacturing employment. Washington must set aside partisan differences and come together to avert these devastating cuts while continuing to put our country on a strong fiscal path for our long-term future.” – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16)
“As someone who has long opposed the reckless automatic spending cuts set to kick in ten days from now, I’m worried about the negative effects these cuts could have on our region’s economy. A one size fits all approach that could harm local workers and businesses is the last thing our economy needs right now. I look forward to working with members of Congress from both sides of the aisle to find a solution that gets our budget in order while protecting Rockford jobs and the Rockford economy.” – Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17)
Due to re-districting of congressional districts in Illinois, both legislators now represent areas of the city of Rockford and Winnebago County. Congresswoman Bustos serves on the House Transportation Committee, and House Agriculture Committee. Congressman Kinzinger serves as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
